It has a 28mm wide-angle Leica DC lens (equivalent to 28-280mm on a 35mm film camera) for wide-angle shooting. The LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens comprises 11 elements in nine groups, including an ED (extra-low dispersion) lens and three aspherical lenses. This advanced lens unit passes Leica's stringent standards and delivers exceptional optical performance. - [Voigtländer Brillant 2x Zoom](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/voigtlander/voigtlander-brillant-2x-zoom/): The Voigtländer Brillant 2x Zoom a simple mid-range 35mm film camera. There is little information about this camera, the same camera was also marketed as Braun Trend 60 Zoom with little information either. It was probably released in the late 90s when the digital market was not coming up yet. It has a wide-angle zoom that covers 28-56mm. The "Brillant" name initially stood for a famous 6x6 Twin Lens Reflex Camera. There is another series of modern 35mm Point and Shoot cameras called Brillant AF with various bodies, but without Zoom. - [Canon Prima Mini (Sure Shot M, Autoboy F)](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/canon/canon-prima-mini-sure-shot-m-autoboy-f/): The Canon Sure Shot M, Prima mini in Europe (Autoboy F in Japan) was a very successful and very compact camera, launched in 1993. An autodate version was available. - [Canon Prima Super 130 (Canon Sure Shot 130u)](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/canon/canon-prima-super-130-canon-sure-shot-130u/): The Canon Prima Super 130 is a super compact autofocus zoom camera with an impressive 130mm zoom. It was first released in 2002. So this is a late film camera, the digital market was already expanding. In 2005 there was the last model, 130u or II, with minor improvements and multi-point autofocus. The camera is also known as Canon Sure Shot 130u and Autoboy N130. - [Bell and Howell Electric Eye ](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/bell-and-howell/bell-and-howell-electric-eye/): The Bell and Howell Electric Eye (introduced in 1959) has the distinction of being one of the first cameras to feature automatic exposure. It does this by a most ingenious mechanism. A Selenium (probably!) cell operates much like any classic light meter, but rather than driving a needle, it moves a finely balanced leaf of metal (the red stripes are visible inside the lens), which reduces the aperture. Insufficient light is signaled by the red flag in the huge viewfinder. Selecting either fast or slow film simply places a filter over the sensor. - [Kodak Brownie Starmatic](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/kodak/kodak-brownie-starmatic/): Find a Kodak Brownie Starmatic on Etsy - [Olympus AZ 330 Super Zoom](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/olympus/olympus-az-330-super-zoom/): The Olympus AZ-330 Super Zoom is a large 35mm film camera. Styled more like an old camcorder its once modern looks are neither iconic nor particularly practical. But it does have plenty of features and can create some great results. The 330 has a range of in-built features that are usually only found on higher-end SLR cameras of the time (such as double exposure mode). - [Werra 1 – The first Werra Camera](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/werra/werra-1-the-first-werra-camera/): The first Werra was introduced in 1954. All Werra subsequent models have four features that define them and make them easy to recognise. - [Photo Walk Log Book Resource and LinkPage](https://rwjemmett.com/linkpage/photo-walk-log-book-resource-and-link-page/): Welcome to the Photo Walk Log Book resource and link page. However it was short lived as the vecta was discontinued in 1966, shortly after the (equally unsucsessful) 127 Model 3 was introduced. - [The Purma Camera Book: A Vintage Camera Guide – Using and Buying Purma Cameras](https://rwjemmett.com/create/books-and-zines/the-purma-camera-book-a-vintage-camera-guide-using-and-buying-purma-cameras/): The Purma Camera book - information on how to buy and use the Purma Speed, Special and Plus cameras made by Purma. The Exif data embedded in the image when the shutter is pressed includes the camera model, exposure details, lens and often the location via GPS data. This data can be easily viewed through programs such as Lightroom. With film or analogue photography this data is not captured by the camera and so we must use a different technique - good old pen and paper, with a well-designed log book. - [Ricoh FF-9 35mm Compact Camera](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/ricoh/ricoh-ff-9-35mm-compact-camera/): The Ricoh FF-9 is a 35mm moderate wide-angle ultra-compact camera that was released in 1988. The original baby Rolleiflex was introduced in 1931 and discontinued in 39, following the launch of the Rolleiflex "sport" (1938-41). The Sport features a 2.8 lens - allowing it to capture fast-moving action more easily. However, the easiest way to tell these apart is that the Sport saw the introduction of the bay 1 filter mount. - [Fujifilm Zoom Date 145, 35mm Film Compact Camera – Results and Feelings about this Film Camera](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/fuji/fujifilm-zoom-date-145-35mm-film-compact-camera-results-and-feelings-about-this-film-camera/): The Fujifilm Zoom Date 145 is a simple to use compact camera. The camera was made by Fuji in Japan from around 2000 and fitted with a 38-145mm zoom lens and databack. It has automatic focus, metering, film transport and flash systems built-in. Fitted with self-timer and tripod mount. It requires an easy to find CR123A battery. - [Photography Log Book – LinkPage. It is a true SLR although it does not have interchangeable lenses. Just a zoom. You can read more about the camera on this blog at Minolta 110 SLR Mk II Film camera – an easy to use portable SLR - [Robot Star, a Square Format 35mm Camera, how Strange](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/robot-camera-company/robot-star/): The Robots are a world apart. They are ultra-small, spring-wound 35mm film cameras with interchangeable lenses. To keep the cameras small, they chose the 24x24mm picture format. They are completely mechanical. They are designed for discreet, hyperfocal use, colour-points on the distance scale of each lens indicate the depth of the field according to the aperture set. Until the introduction of the Star II, they had an angle-viewer for more discretion. So the Robots played an important role in spying from the 30s to the 80s. There were silenced shutters available. And there were technical versions with big film canisters for the use in trafic radars. - [Voigtländer Vito C / Balda CA35 a Lightweight Automatic Camera to Look out for](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/voigtlander/voigtlander-vito-c-balda-ca-35/): If you look at the Voigtländer Vito C, you are certainly reminded of the Minox 35 series. There is a very similar Minox model, the Minox 35 ML. And there is a Balda CA 35, which is technically the same camera as the Vito C. There is a reason for this. - [Canon Dial 35 (Bell & Howell Dial 35)](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/canon/canon-dial-35-bell-howell-dial-35/): The Canon Dial 35 was first released in 1963. It already has a CDS meter and film is advanced via a spring motor. It's a horizontally orientated semi automatic camera, you choose the speed and it sets the aperture. In 1968 a second version was released, the 35-2, which has major improvements: a much better spring motor, extended ISO to 800/1000, a more recent battery and it has a hot shoe. Both versions were also sold branded as Bell & Howell. - [Rollei 35 S an Easy to Handle Compact 35mm Camera](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/rollei/rollei-35-s-compact-camera/): When the Rollei 35 was first released in 1966, it was the smallest 35mm film full-frame camera, a title it held for quite some time. The camera was designed in the early 1960s in his spare time by Heinz Waaske, chief engineer of German camera maker Wirgin. He had also engineered and designed the 16 mm Wirgin Edixa 16. He proposed the camera to Wirgin, then to Leitz and Kodak, but they all didn't want it. When he changed employment to Rollei and showed them his little camera, they were immediately convinced and started the project. The 35 model had a 40mm F 3.5 Zeiss Tessar lens. - [INTO THE FOREST Zine, Forest Adventure with Pen EE Camera and Poodle](https://rwjemmett.com/create/books-and-zines/into-the-forest-zine-forest-adventure-with-pen-ee-camera-and-poodle/): I have enjoyed creating a zine and publishing a limited printed edition of the document. It was a new design by Yoshihisa Maitani, the chief camera designer of Olympus since the 1950s, who developed a number of legendary cameras like the Pen, the OM series and the XA. It inherited the round design and the sliding cover from the XA. Small and lightweight, it has even an integrated flash. Its successor was the mju II in 1997. The mju was first built in Japan, later it was assembled in China with Japanese parts and called mju I when more models of the series were launched. Its main features are: - [My New Yashica (Kyocera) EZ Zoom 105 – What’s in the Box?](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/yashica/my-new-yashica-kyocera-ez-zoom-105-whats-in-the-box/): The Yashica EZ Zoom 105 is a fully automatic point and shoot with a 38-105mm zoom lens that will produce beautiful photos at the push of a button! - [My New Olympus LT Zoom 105 – What’s in the Box?](https://rwjemmett.com/create/photography-equipment/cameras/olympus/my-new-olympus-lt-zoom-105-whats-in-the-box/): After buying and using my 1964 Olympus Pen EE and purchasing two other cameras (yet to be used), I decided to buy a lovely Olympus LT Zoom 105. I did some careful research on Olympus compacts and saw the high prices some were attracting high prices including the Olympus mju series (see Olympus mju III Wide as an example) - [My Project – Stay Safe](https://rwjemmett.com/enjoy-photography/street-photography-and-urban/my-project-stay-safe/): During March and April like most people in the UK, I walked around my local streets and parks and the forest which is literally a stone's throw from our house. Our passion for capturing precious memories is evident in every frame we create. - [Repeat Photography Project – USGS](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/repeat-photography-project-usgs/): Repeat photography provides objective visual evidence of landscape change. USGS scientists created approximately sixty repeat photography pairs that document glacier change in Glacier National Park. These photograph pairs are available as a collection hosted by the USGS Photographic Library and are publicly available for download.  Modern (1997 to 2019) photographs were taken from precisely the same location as historic (1887 to 1943) photographs, enabling direct comparison of the landscape then and now. The photographs document glacier change and illustrate the impact of climate warming on the glaciers of Glacier National Park. - [New York Changing: Douglas Levere](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/new-york-changing-douglas-levere/): New York Changing: Douglas Levere Revisits Berenice Abbott’s New York presents pairs of images by contemporary photographer Douglas Levere and world-renown photographer Berenice Abbott. Abbott’s iconic photographs, drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, were taken in the 1930s and first published in her landmark book, Changing New York (1939). More than six decades later, Levere used the same camera Abbott had used and returned to the same locations at the same time of day and the same time of year. Indeed, he took on the role of detective as he successfully sought to understand and replicate every aspect of Abbott’s process. When seen side by side, these two remarkable bodies of work reveal much about the city and the nature of urban transformation.  Perhaps more than anything else, these carefully crafted images powerfully suggest that in New York, the only constant is change. - [The Third View Project (Mark Klett)](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/the-third-view-project-mark-klett/): Third View added a third image to the pairs made during the Rephotographic Survey Project. It began exactly twenty years after the first rephotography project and used the same methods to repeat photographs made for the western surveys of the 1860s and 1870s. Photographs for this project continued to be made on film, but otherwise Third View differed from the RSP in the extended use of new technologies. - [Time-Travel Rephotography](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/time-travel-rephotography/): Many historical people were only ever captured by old, faded, black and white photos, that are distorted due to the limitations of early cameras and the passage of time. This paper simulates traveling back in time with a modern camera to rephotograph famous subjects. Unlike conventional image restoration filters which apply independent operations like denoising, colorization, and superresolution, we leverage the StyleGAN2 framework to project old photos into the space of modern high-resolution photos, achieving all of these effects in a unified framework. A unique challenge with this approach is retaining the identity and pose of the subject in the original photo, while discarding the many artifacts frequently seen in low-quality antique photos. Our comparisons to current state-of-the-art restoration filters show significant improvements and compelling results for a variety of important historical people. - [Time After Time – Mark Hersch](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/time-after-time-mark-hersch/): My work spans two dimensions - the dimensions of space and time. It merges elements of the past with those of the present, and reflects a blending of several of my lifelong passions: history and photography, art and science, and the evolution of architecture. - [Re-Photo](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/re-photo/): Rephotography means the act of taking a photo of a scene that has already been photographed some time ago. It is a challenge for the photographer to approximate the original location and camera pose as good as possible. The resulting picture pair is called Before And After picture. Suited are both buildings and people: - [GhostViewer – See Through Time](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/ghostviewer-see-through-time/): Recreate old photographs from the same viewpoint today. GhostViewer helps you align historic and modern photos so you can see the past and present in one clear comparison. This process is often called rephotography, re-photography, then and now, before and after, or comparative photography. - [EyeMedia Studios](https://rwjemmett.com/directory/eyemedia-studios/): EyeMedia Studios is a professional photography studio located in the heart of Central London. There are many how to books whether they are original camera manuals or photography technique books, but I found few books that help a photographer get the most from using old and vintage cameras in today’s world. I chose to use Purma cameras as they are a somewhat eccentric series of cameras, relatively easy to use and readily available at a reasonable price from auction sites, car boot fairs, Facebook Marketplace, etc. The shutter mechanism, lens and body are all simple and it is therefore usually possible to understand whether a Purma camera is usable upon first inspection. The only issue that photographers may need to navigate is the supply of 127 film. It is available from some film suppliers or sourced by adapting 120 film. This book is a compilation of information from several out of print publications, web resources and my own observations and experience of using Purma cameras. I have taken the opportunity to update both the content and grammar of the out of print publications to make them more readable and helpful to photographers using a vintage camera in the twenty twenties. The project had an almost accidental origin: Levere was at an auction preview when he stopped in front of Abbott's vintage contact print of Broadway near Broome Street, photographed in 1935. He lived on Broome Street. Standing in front of an image of the view outside his own building, taken six decades earlier, he found himself compulsively comparing and contrasting — and before long, imagining what his own camera would see from the same spot. - [William Notman](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/william-notman/): William Notman (1826–1891) was a Scottish-born photographer who emigrated to Montreal in 1856 and went on to become one of the most significant documentary photographers in North American history. Working from his studio on Bleury Street — and later from a network of branches across Canada and the United States — Notman built a vast archive of portraits, landscapes, and urban views that amounted to a comprehensive visual record of 19th-century Canadian life. His technical mastery was exceptional: he was among the first photographers to stage elaborate composite photographs, combining separately shot figures against painted backdrops to create scenes that would have been impossible to capture in a single exposure. - [Photogrammetry](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/photogrammetry/): The science of making precise measurements and spatial data from photographs. By analysing the geometry of objects as they appear in an image — their relative size, position, and perspective — photogrammetrists can calculate real-world distances, elevations, and coordinates without physically measuring them on the ground. In the context of rephotography, photogrammetric principles underpin the practice of precisely reoccupying an original camera position: working backwards from the geometry of a historical photograph to determine exactly where, at what height, and with what focal length the original image was made. - [Diachronic](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/diachronic/): Concerned with the way something changes or develops over time, as opposed to examining it at a single fixed point. In rephotography, a diachronic image pair shows the same location across two or more points in time, making change — or continuity — directly visible. The term contrasts with synchronic, which describes a snapshot of something as it exists at one particular moment. - [Rephotography](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/rephotography/): Rephotography — sometimes called repeat photography — is the practice of photographing the same location from the same position on two or more separate occasions, with a significant time gap between images. The objective is a direct visual comparison: a diachronic pair that shows what has changed, what has survived, and what has been lost entirely. Read the Post - The Art and Craft of Photographing Time. Rephotography Organisations and Information - [Ulanzi Group](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/ulanzi-group/): A one-stop photography and videography solution provider. - [William Klein](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/william-klein/): William Klein was an American-born French photographer and filmmaker known for his groundbreaking and unconventional approach to both media. Born in New York City in 1928, Klein's career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the world of photography and film. - [Martin Parr CBE](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/martin-parr-cbe/): Martin Parr CBE (1952) is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical and anthropological look at aspects of modern life, in particular documenting the social classes of England, and more broadly the wealth of the Western world. - [Chris Killip](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/chris-killip/): Christopher David Killip (11 July 1946 – 13 October 2020) was a Manx photographer who worked at Harvard University from 1991 to 2017, as a Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies. Killip is known for his black and white images of people and places especially of Tyneside during the 1980s. - [Graham Smith](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/graham-smith/): Graham Smith (born 1947) is a photographer from Middlesbrough, England, who was particularly active in photographing Middlesbrough and the north-east of England in the 1970s and 1980s. Smith curtailed his career as a photographer in 1990, since when he has been a professional woodworker. - [IBIS](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/ibis/): IBIS, or In-Body Image Stabilisation, is a feature found in some digital cameras that helps to reduce the effects of camera shake when capturing images or videos. It works by using sensors to detect any movement or shake in the camera and then compensates for it by moving the camera's sensor in the opposite direction of the movement. This results in sharper and clearer images and videos, especially in low light situations, slow shutter speeds, or when using longer focal lengths. - [TRS & TRRS](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/trs-trrs/): A TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) microphone cable is a type of audio cable commonly used to connect microphones to audio equipment, such as mixers, speakers, and audio interfaces. The TRS connector has three conductors, the tip, ring, and sleeve, which allow for stereo or balanced audio transmission. This type of cable is widely used in professional audio applications for its reliability and high-quality signal transmission. Cameras typically use (if they have a microphone port) a 3.5mm TRS cable. - [Hot Shoe](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/hot-shoe/): A camera hot shoe is a metal bracket on the top of a camera that allows various accessories to be attached, such as external flashes, microphones, and other equipment. These accessories typically have a matching "foot" that slides into the hot shoe and makes a secure connection for communication and power transfer. They are used to connect flash guns, flash triggers, microphones (although the connections are usually not used and the microphone uses a microphone port), digital viewfinder, etc. - [Microphone Port](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/microphone-port/): A camera microphone port is a port on a camera that allows you to connect an external microphone for better audio quality when recording videos. This port is typically found on digital cameras, camcorders, and other video recording devices. Using an external microphone can help reduce background noise and improve the overall audio clarity of your recordings. It is seen as a premium feature. The microphone is connected to the camera via a short able if it is mounted not the camera (often on the hot show) or via a bluetooth deice attached to the camera or a longer cable. Cameras usually use a TRS jack/plug whereas other equipment such as an iPad uses TRRS. - [ND Filter](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/nd-filter/): An ND (Neutral Density) filter is a type of filter that reduces the amount of light entering a camera lens, allowing the photographer to use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright conditions without overexposing the image. ND filters are commonly used in landscape photography to create long exposure effects, such as smooth water and blurred motion. Some cameras such as the Canon G series (see Canon G12 and XZ1) have a built in ND filter. - [Digicam](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/digicam/): A digicam, short for digital camera, is a camera that captures and stores photographs electronically instead of using photographic film like traditional cameras. The term is most usually used for older digital cameras and can be sought after as film camera replacements. Digicams record images using digital technology, typically saving them on a memory card for easy transfer to a computer or other device. These cameras have become increasingly popular due to their convenience, ease of use, and ability to instantly view and share photos. - [Digital Viewfinder](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/digital-viewfinder/): A digital viewfinder is effectively a small screen that displays the image the camera is capturing in real-time. This allows the photographer to see exactly what the camera is pointing at and make any necessary adjustments to framing, focus, exposure, and composition before taking the shot. Digital viewfinders can be found on most modern digital cameras, ranging from compact point-and-shoots to high-end professional DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. They offer a clear and accurate preview of the final image, making it easier for the photographer to get the perfect shot. They hold advantages on an optical viewfinder. - [Optical Viewfinder](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/optical-viewfinder/): A camera optical viewfinder is a small window on a camera that allows the user to frame and compose a shot by looking through it. Typically uses a system of mirrors and lenses (SLR and DSLR) to show the view through the camera's lens, giving a real-time, optical representation of the scene. On simple cameras it is just a lens that roughly lines up with the frame, but may not be accurate and may not change with a zoom lens. This can be especially useful in bright lighting conditions or when shooting fast-moving subjects where using the camera's digital screen may be difficult. - [RAW](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/raw/): RAW is a file format that contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of a digital camera. RAW files are larger in size compared to JPEG files, as they retain all of the image data captured by the camera sensor without any compression. This allows for greater latitude in adjusting exposure, colour balance, and other image settings in post-processing, resulting in higher quality prints and digital images. - [Francis Meadow Sutcliffe](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/francis-meadow-sutcliffe/): Francis Meadow Sutcliffe (1853-1941) was an English photographer known for his captivating images of life in the seaside town of Whitby, England during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sutcliffe began his career as a portrait photographer but eventually transitioned to outdoor photography, capturing the everyday lives of the people in Whitby, as well as its stunning landscapes and seascapes. - [Back Button Focus](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/back-button-focus/): Back button focus is a technique used in photography that separates the focusing and shutter release functions on a digital camera. Instead of the default setting, where the shutter button is used to both focus and capture an image, with back button focus the user assigns the focusing function to a button on the back of the camera (usually the AF-ON button). This allows the user to focus independently of capturing the image. This can be useful in situations where you want to lock focus and recompose the shot before taking the picture. For example, putting a near object in focus within a wider composition. - [Bridge Camera](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/bridge-camera/): The bridge camera is a form factor that is between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR, the sensors are often small sensors for the larger form factor, but bridges offer incredible zoom power very often at high lens speeds. They also tend to be very affordable new and used. - [Todd Hido](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/todd-hido/): Todd Hido is a San Francisco Bay Area-based artist whose work has been featured in Artforum, The New York Times Magazine, Eyemazing, Wired, Elephant, FOAM, and Vanity Fair. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Getty, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young, the Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Pier 24 Photography, as well as in many other public and private collections. He has over a dozen published books; his most recent monograph titled Excerpts from Silver Meadows was released in 2013, along with an innovative b-sides box set designed to function as a companion piece to his award-winning monograph in 2014. Aperture will publish his mid-career survey in 2016. - from Todd Hido's website. - [Crop Factor](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/crop-factor/): Crop factor is the ratio of the camera sensor size to what the lens can see. DSLR cameras often have multiple sensors of varying sizes to control for distortions that come from crop factor. It describes the difference between your camera's sensor size and a traditional 35mm film frame. It's mainly used as a way of comparing lens focal lengths when fitted to different cameras. A cropped sensor captures less of the projected image. The narrower angle of view gives the impression of using a longer focal length. For micro four thirds this is two times. For example, a 50mm for a 35mm camera is equivelent to a 25mm micro four thirds lens. - [Prime Lens](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/prime-lens/): Prime lenses have a fixed focal length. Distinct from zoom lenses, which have variable focal lengths. Sometimes called unifocal lenses. A typical and common prime lens for 35mm film cameras is the 50mm lens  - sometimes know as the nifty-fifty. - [Mirrorless](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/mirrorless/): Technically speaking most DSLR, point-and-shoot and smartphone cameras are mirrorless, in that they don’t have internal mirrors. However, mirrorless camera is a specific term for a camera where the sensor is directly exposed to light and the photographer has a preview of the potential image at all times to view on an electronic viewfinder. For example the Olympus and Panasonic micro four-thirds cameras are mirrorless. - [Aspect Ratio](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/aspect-ratio/): The aspect ratio is the relationship between an image's height and width. Aspect ratios are more often written with the width first, followed by the height. The aspect ratio you use depends on the type of project you're shooting. It is usually recommend to use 4:3 for photos and 16:9 for videos. - [Gimbal](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/gimbal/): In its purest form, a gimbal is a pivoted support that permits the rotation of an object about an axis. In photography terms a gimbal is a device that allows you to capture stabilized, smooth footage from your camera or phone camera while moving. The two most common types of stabilization are 3-axis and 2-axis. 3-axis stabilizers counteract all three motions: up/down (yaw), left/right (pitch), and forward/backward (roll). - [MP3](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/mp3/): MP3 unlike MP4 is an audio-only container that stands for MPEG-1 Audio Layer III. This format compresses audio files to make storing sound bites and music easier and more versatile. - [MOV](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/mov/): Although MOV (QuickTime Movie) files store high-quality video, audio, and effects, they can be fairly large files. MOV files were created by Apple for QuickTime Player and use MPEG-4 encoding to play with QuickTime for Windows. Facebook and YouTube both accept MOV files. - [MP4](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/mp4/): MP4 is the most prevalent video file format (MPEG-4 Part 14). MP4, Apple’s preferred format, is compatible with most devices. It stores video, audio, and text files using the MPEG-4 encoding process, but it has a lesser resolution than some others. MP4 can be used for popular social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. - [Saturation](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/saturation-2/): Saturation refers to the colour intensity of an image. As their saturation increases, colours appear more vivid and are considered more pure. Decreasing saturation results in muted colors, with full desaturation giving a black and white/monochromatic version of the image. It is different to vibrance where only those colors that are less saturated than the rest become more vivid with its application. - [Saturation](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/saturation/): Saturation refers to the colour intensity of an image. As their saturation increases, colours appear more vivid and are considered more pure. Decreasing saturation results in muted colors, with full desaturation giving a black and white/monochromatic version of the image. It is different to vibrance where only those colors that are less saturated than the rest become more vivid with its application. - [Vibrance](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/vibrance/): Vibrance is a post-processing photography term coined by Adobe and used to describe a 'smart' saturation setting. Unlike the saturation control, which increases all colours’ pureness equally, vibrance only affects those colors that are less saturated than the rest. It is therefore a powerful tool for post-processing of images. - [FPS](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/fps/): FPS stands for frames per second and determines the speed at which a camera can take photos/frames. It is especially important for sport and wildlife photographers, who may need to be able to shoot rapidly to make sure they capture perfectly-timed images. More FPS is considered an advantage and can be a differential factor in choosing a camera. - [CMOS](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/cmos/): A CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) is a type of metal–oxide–semiconductor that is one of two types of sensors used in digital cameras, the other being CCD. CMOS sensors are equipped with “rolling shutters,” which expose different parts of the frame at different points in time. This can lead to skew, wobble, and partial exposure in photographs. However, neither technology is a clear winner over the other in overall image quality. - [CCD](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/ccd/): A CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) is an integrated circuit containing an array of linked or coupled capacitors and it is one of two types of sensors used in digital cameras and other optical devices.  The other one being CMOS. - [Autofocus](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/autofocus/): Autofocus (AF) is an optical system that uses a sensor, a control system and a motor to focus on an automatically or manually selected point or area. The process of autofocusing generally works as follows: - [Panasonic](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/panasonic/): Panasonic K. K. (was: Matsushita Electric Industrial) is a Japanese company that uses the brand name Panasonic for its electronic devices, including digital cameras and analogue cameras in the past. Panasonic also use the brand Lumix.  - [Contrast](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/contrast/): The term contrast defines the range of tonal difference between the shadows and lights of an image. As the contrast becomes higher it emphasises these variations, resulting in stronger textures and colours. Pictures with lower contrast may be perceived as dull or flat, as a smaller difference between lights and shadows results in a muted appearance. - [Megapixel](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/megapixel/): A megapixel contains 1,000,000 (1 million) pixels and is the unit of measure used to describe the size of the sensor in a digital camera. It is often abbreviated to mp or MP. - [JPEG](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/jpeg/): JPEG is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group and the standard format in which pictures are compressed. Due to this compression, JPEG files are smaller and carry less information. Sometimes also denoted as jpg or jpeg. - [Pixel](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/pixel/): Pixel is the smallest unit of programmable colour represented on a digital display. Every photograph, in digital form, is made up of pixels. Higher resolutions mean that there are more pixels per inch (PPI), resulting in more pixel information and creating a high-quality, crisp image. Images with lower resolutions have fewer pixels, and if those few pixels are too large (usually when an image is stretched), they can become visible. The word “pixel” means a picture element. However, the number of pixels is not the determining factor in how good a camera is. - [Resolution](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/resolution/): Refers to the number of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, used to either capture or display an image. The higher the resolution, the finer the image detail will be. - [RGB](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/rgb/): RGB (Red Green Blue) is an additive colour model in which red, green and blue light are added together in various ways to reproduce a broad array of colours for representation and display as images on computers and other digital devices. - [sRGB](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/srgb/): The standard colour gamut for Windows operating systems. sRGB is also the "lowest common denominator" for colour standards, because it can be reproduced on the least expensive computer screens. Adobe RGB is a wider-gamut colour space and is preferred for those seeking higher accuracy in colour rendition. - [TIFF ](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/tiff/): TIFF files (Tagged-Image File Format) are flexible bitmap image files supported by virtually all paint, image editing, and page-layout applications. Virtually all desktop scanners can create TIFF images. This format, which uses the .tif extension, supports CMYK, RGB, Lab, and grayscale files with alpha channels and Bitmap files without alpha channels. TIFF also supports LZW compression, a lossless compression format. - [EXIF](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/exif/): Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) is a standard that defines specific information related to an image or other media captured by a digital camera. It is capable of storing such important data as camera exposure, date/time the image was captured, and even GPS location. - [Photography Logbook](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/photography-logbook/): A book or booklet is used to record information about camera settings and the environment when the photograph is used. Particularly useful for film cameras when no EXIF data is recorded. - [Photoshop](https://rwjemmett.com/glossary/photoshop/): Photoshop is an image creation, graphic design and photo editing software developed by Adobe. The software provides many image editing features for pixel-based images, raster graphics and vector graphics. It has entered mainstream vocabulary as a verb 'to photoshop an image'. ## Galleries - [gallery test](https://rwjemmett.com/envira/gallery-test-2/) - [test1](https://rwjemmett.com/envira/test1/) - [Aqua](https://rwjemmett.com/envira/aqua/) ## Categories -
