Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3

Panasonic Lumix TZ3

Overview

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 was once billed as the world’s smallest camera with 10x optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle Leica lens a 7 Megapixel sensor and 3 Inch LCD Screen. It has a 28mm wide-angle Leica DC lens (equivalent to 28-280mm on a 35mm film camera) for wide-angle shooting. The LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens comprises 11 elements in nine groups, including an ED (extra-low dispersion) lens and three aspherical lenses. This advanced lens unit passes Leica’s stringent standards and delivers exceptional optical performance.

The description of this camera also includes information about the combination of optical and digital zoom  – the zoom ratio can be extended up to 15x in 3-megapixel resolution mode with minimal deterioration thanks to the Extra Optical Zoom. By using the central part of the CCD, this powerful zooming function allows you to easily capture and magnify distant subjects. Furthermore, in combination with the 4x digital zoom, a zoom factor of up to 60x can be achieved (55x for the DMC-TZ2). I did not try this with my TZ3.

It was introduced to the market in 2007. And described as follows

‘The Panasonic DMC-TZ3 is a very compact camera with a sharp 28-280mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens. As the 28mm wide angle and 10x zoom range cover every popular focal length, this is a great camera for travelling and for holidays. The AF system is fast and responsive, while the optical image stabilizer permits using the telephoto settings without a tripod. The nickname ‘Traveller’ is very well chosen.’
