Time After Time – Mark Hersch

Description

My work spans two dimensions – the dimensions of space and time. It merges elements of the past with those of the present, and reflects a blending of several of my lifelong passions: history and photography, art and science, and the evolution of architecture.

As a child growing up in Boston and Washington – and later in cities I lived in or visited – I found endless fascination with the rich history I discovered there. Places where important events took place; where great men and women of the day founded a country and created the dream we call America. Much of that dream is reflected in the structures and neighborhoods they designed and built, and often – either out of desire or necessity – rebuilt.

I set out through photography to capture all of this in a way that evokes the same feelings I get whenever I visit these places to this day. A sense of awe upon seeing the towering skyline of Chicago, the granite monuments of Washington; the narrow streets of Boston and the diverse neighborhoods of San Francisco.
I’ve named this collection “Time After Time”.

Rephotography is the process of shooting an image at two different moments in time. This is often seen when two photographs of the same subject are shown side-by-side. For example, satellite images of a location before and after a flood. Or photographs of an individual in different stages of life.

I take rephotography a step further. I merge historic, archival photographs with contemporary photographs I shoot from the same vantage point in the present day. I then bring them together to form a single image, revealing parts of the old world and parts of the new world, thus creating a conversation about time and space.
